fess up friday - the design daredevil

Happy Friday my Valentine's! Today's Fess Up Friday features the lovely Jessie from The Design Daredevil. Girlfriend has style in spades (check out her latest reveal here), she's been on TWO shows on HGTV, and lucky for me she's local. Oh, and her apartment is pretty much my dream pad. And a warning to all of you St. Louis retailers - Jessie and I are hitting the streets together soon. Prepare.

So Jessie, Fess Up!

Hello hello hello LBD readers! I am excited to be Elizabeth's guest, as she is my fellow St. Louis blog sister. I'm not even half the blogger she is, so I'm sure most of you have not met me yet. I am a 32 year old interior designer working under the firm CURE Design Group. Here are a few looks at projects I've either completed, or am in the middle of working on...

Fun and cheerful, full of color and pattern. Cute, right? Well...it's all a lie. A big, fat COLORFUL lie.
That's right folks; I, Jessie D. Miller, do not like color.

GAH! I'm sure that I just lost 99% of you. Come back. Please? I have my reasons, I swear.

You see, working as a full time interior designer, with anywhere from 4-10 different projects going on at one time, I am visually assaulted with color and pattern on a daily basis. I am constantly selecting paint colors, accent colors, and coming up with a "pop of color"; so in my personal space I crave NO color.
But don't get it twisted, I didn't mean that my home is neutral. Oh no, I want high contrast by way of black, white, and gold/brass.
Here is a peek at my still-not finished apartment by way of crappy, un-styled iPhone pics. Don't judge me. At least not until its done.

But I'm not completely heartless. I did add some green to my balcony, the only "done' part of my home.

I mean, I'm not a total hater.
Plus, I love to go all out decorating for the holidays. My home is adaptable to all kinds of different themes.IMG_2604_FotorThanksgiving 9Thanksgiving 1Gold Christmas Tree 5Gold Christmas Tree 16

Okay, still not a lot of color, but you get the idea. So, do you think I'm all Patrick Bateman, or are you willing to give me a chance? I may live in a stark home, but I lead a colorful life.

Thank you so much for having me Elizabeth! And when the heck are we going to get
drunkdrinks and go thrifting? Hopefully we can report back on that soon, but in the mean time follow my design adventures on IG @designdaredevil

Jessie, we are going to have some colorful drinks in honor of this post! So what do y'all think? Do you live with a lot of color? Or just enjoy it from 9-5?

fess up friday - the pink pagoda

I don't know about you but I feel we all need an Olympic medal for making it to the end of this week! But Friday is finally here and I've got goodies galore. First up, you can catch me over at Primitive & Proper taking part in Cassie's fun It's Eclectic series. Check it out here.

And also, what would a Friday be without a good Fess Up?! Today we've got one of my very favorite ladies, store and blog all rolled up into one - Jennifer from The Pink Pagoda. I'm lucky enough to have some of Jennifer's wonderful prints in my living room and I covet just about every single blue and white item she has in her shop. And on top of all of that style and talent, she is genuinely one of the nicest people I have (virtually) met.

So Jennifer, Fess Up!

TV at TPP

My family room pre-ORC.  Still looks somewhat the same, just different reflections in the TV and messier book stacks.

I adore Elizabeth's "Fess Up Friday" series.  What fun to read about everyone's idiosyncrasies!  Today, I'm confiding four things about TV at my house.

Before I begin the confessional, I'll say that since both Elizabeth and I have design blogs, I thought I'd include some photos that illustrate the tricky TV being handled well.

Lonny

First, I admit that I love TV.  I used to be kind of snobby about it and thought people should read instead of watching television (former English teacher of 10 years).  My, how things have changed.

As my 16 year old daughter has lots of extra-curricular activities that keep her busy, plus ridiculous amounts of homework, we aren't watching much TV as a family.

OKL

But, when we are watching, my daughter is heavily influencing the choices.

AD

Which leads me to the second thing I'm sharing about TV at my house.

HB

I did mention that my daughter's 16, right?  As a result, aesthetics are influencing our viewing.

That means we're watching Downton Abbey, Arrested Development, Castle, Sherlock, Jimmy Fallon, Idol, Parks and Rec, and White Collar with her.

The third thing that might surprise you is that I do not care for Chick TV.

And, that's happy for my husband.  He doesn't have to watch The Bachelorette and I don't have to watch sports. Very conveniently, we like the same TV.  Homeland, House of Cards, and Boardwalk Empire are some of our favorites.

Lastly, I'll admit that I partake in binge TV. Sometimes, an episode is so good that you just HAVE to watch the next one.  And then the next one, too.  Yikes.  DVDs, Netflix and DVRs make binge watching just too easy.  Some of the shows that are too addicting to stop after one episode are Damages, Dexter, Six Feet Under, The Killing, 30 Rock, and I could go on unfortunately.

Whew.  I feel much better after the "Fess Up."  Thanks for having me, Elizabeth!  Hopefully some of your readers can relate : )

I can totally relate! Especially since I'm counting down the days until the new House of Cards season starts next week! Thanks Jennifer for playing along today.

And one last bit of great news - Jennifer is up for best Design Blog Graphics and Presentation award in the Design Bloggers Conference Hall of Fame! Not too shabby! Please take a minute to click here and cast your vote. I know I've voted and I would love to see her win!!

Happy Weekend all!

fess up friday - julia ryan

Happy Fess Up Friday everyone! Today is a treat because we have the dear Julia, of Julia Ryan (formally Pawleys Island Posh). Julia's blog was one of my first blog addictions. I love her style, her approach to motherhood and the fact that she's gotten to live in two of my very favorite places - Charleston and Richmond. And if you haven't checked out her daughter's new room yet, add that to your to-do list. Really. Thanks Julia for coming over today. Now let's do some sharing, shall we?

Hey ladies!  I'm Julia from JuliaRyan.com and I'm so pleased to be here with you today.  When Elizabeth asked me to participate in Fess Up Friday I honestly balked a little.  Not because I didn't want to over-expose myself.  It's just that I tend to be pretty free flowing with my personal self already.  I'm a pretty open blogger book.  So I thought to myself, what don't y'all already know?

I don't like dogs.  Or pets of any sort for that matter.  I'm just not an animal person.

There I said it.  Do you hate me yet?  Don't worry, other people's beloved companions don't bother me in the slightest (I'm not Cruella DeVil over here) I just prefer not to have them.  I also prefer to admire those cute pups from across the room.  Or like their little wet noses on instagram instead of real life.  I think they're sweet, just not for me.

This, of course, is a sad state of reality for my dog loving husband.  He's had a dog in the past during our marriage, and I know that one day he and the kids will team up against me in their canine demands and I will give in out of love.  But I won't like it.  And it will never be my turn to take them for a walk in the rain.

I'm obsessed with high end kitchen gear but I don't like to cook.  I pretty much only tolerate it in an effort to feed my family.  Without the fancy gear and wine I'd probably never even make that effort.  I think if I had more time and more money for better ingredients I'd be more into it.  Despite this, my kitchen is still my favorite room in the house.  And who says you can't cook hotdogs on an-clad pan?

I prefer my hair long so I can wear it up.  That's right, I pretty much never wear my hair down.  My sister made me pull it down for a recent photo shoot of my daughter's room and I hate the result.  I just like the way I look with my hair up.  And let's not even talk about the convenience factor.  I once told a girl at Nordstrom that I was so glad young cute girls like her were embracing the messy top-knot so I could make less of an effort in the mornings and still feel polished. I doubt she appreciated the sentiment that her coif resembled my messy mom-bun.

I for one would be happy to have my hair pulled back for the rest of my life if I could. Thanks Julia for coming over today!

fess up friday - powell brower

Thanks everyone for your kind words about my hand. Being a one handed mamma isn't easy, especially with so many zippers to zip and hands to stuff in tiny gloves, but the hubs is properly babying me and I'll be back in fighting shape soon.

So in the mean time enjoy a little Fess Up fun with my girl Bethany from Powell Brower at Home. Bethany is a woman of many talents, including a successful design business she runs with mom Nancy, another full time job, dog training and general awesomeness. And on top of all that she just happens to crack me up most of the time. And we all know how much I love funny people. Let's see what she has to fess up about...

I love what Elizabeth is cooking up with the Fess Up Fridays so I am thrilled to fess up today!  Thanks, E! Apparently I have a few things to get off my chest because I have two fess ups, one design related and one not.  Let's start with the latter.

This actually may come as no surprise to those closest to me (ahem, Mom) but I hate talking on the phone.  Hate.

I live at my desk and look at this clutter!  I basically live on the phone for work, so I hate to answer it afterhours.  Texts and email have become such an efficient way to communicate and I have started to prefer them.  I've come to think of phone calls as the bearers of bad news -- an unwanted request I have a hard time fielding or a certain satellite radio company calling about my subscription every.single.day.  When I commuted to and from work, I relied so heavily on the phone to ease my boredom.  Now, I'd rather save my chats for in-person or weekends. I am a type-A, bubbly extrovert and while I am quite chatty, I find that coupled with the hyper-connectivity of the world, I am left feeling like I want to unplug and recharge my batteries.  I just want to be unreachable for a little while.  Although if you were to ask my husband and mom, I'm sure they'd confer I already am.

Tell me...do you like the phone? Do you prefer to text or talk? Is it just my generation? I used to think my hipster brother, on the cusp of a different generation, was more likely to side-button a phone call. Now I find it's me!

Next secret...

I heart a good karate chopped pillow.  I know some decorators hate them and I can see where they are obnoxious at times.  I find myself coveting structure because I live in a world full of down-fill fails.  We're a one-sofa-household and that poor thing has been lounged on and squashed half to death by my husband and three dogs!  Thankfully, I get about 8 hours of karate-chopped bliss with my euro shams every day.  But for all other areas of the house, it's usually misshapen and disheveled land.

How about you? Do you "hi-yah" your pillows?

fess up friday - calling it home

Today's Fess Up Friday features my dear friend Linda from Calling it Home, One Room Challenge creator and all around awesome blogger. Linda and I often chat about non-blog related things, like what we are drinking on any particular night, what to watch on Netflix and our need for warmer weather. I knew we had a lot in common, but after reading this I think we might just be separated at birth. Take it away Linda.

Hello LBD readers and stalkers!

Today is true confessions Fess Up Friday. I am confident that after you read this, you will know how truly nuts I am. We are talking cray cray ...no holding back.

There is no easy way to say this, I sing in the car!

Yup, out loud and everything.

When one of my favorite songs come on...I just can't help it.

I start doing a little dance, too.

Not this kind of dancing

This kind... think MTV video vixen.

And when my daughter is in a good mood...that's always hit or miss,

She joins me.

And when other drivers notice my personal concert...

I own it!

Thanks for the GIF's, Taylor

A friend of mine from High School would always say, "I love when people sing, it means they are happy". That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Now it's your turn, what do you do in the car? Come on, fess up!

fess up friday - lekalia interiors

First Fess Up Friday of the new year people. Can I get a "what what"!

Today I'm excited to have my friend Leslie of Lekalia Interiors over. You probably already know Leslie from her amazing store on Etsy but you should also know that Leslie is a triple threat in the design world. Girlfriend can design a pretty fab room, reupholster the furniture to go in said fab room and then top it all off with pillows she's made herself. Just check out some of her work here. I'm thinking Leslie, you need to live closer to me.

Hi Everyone!
I'm so excited that Elizabeth asked me to participate in Fess Up Friday! I love reading her blog and love that she tells it like it is.  I mean, she had me at 'ruh roh' (during this post) and what's better than laughing and smiling and learning along with the blogs that you read? Nuttin!

So my little thing that I want to 'fess up' to today is my tray obsession

I began using trays as centerpiece vignettes in the houses that I staged last summer for my real estate staging business...

A little tray here.....

And a little tray there....

Then I made a tray for my BFF for her birthday....

Then, I created a tray for the Blue & White Bash over at The Pink Pagoda...

Then I created a 'Tray of the Day' series on my blog....

Then Linda from Calling it Home blogged about some great bargains including a fab tray and a clothing steamer... and I bought both (because of her!) and sent her this 'tray of the day' pic to make her giggle....

Then I styled it up for the Holidays....

And after rearranging a few thing-a-ma-jigs in my house.... here is today's tray!

So I wonder....does anyone else have an obsession with trays?
Come on, Fess Up! :)

Thank you Elizabeth!  You are the bestest!
