President Obama Makes a Gutsy Call and Stands by His Man...

Unfortunately Chuck Hagel gave less than a stellar performance during his confirmation hearings. Therefore it is reasonable to expect many, especially in the rEbublican and neocon camp to have grave reservations with his nomination/confirmation. Taking a step back and reviewing his background and qualifications I find no reasons not to confirm. Perhaps reason will prevail in the Senate (unlikely) and Hagel will be confirmed.

POLITICO - President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have fiercely defended the nomination of Chuck Hagel, despite advisers and Hill Democrats who questioned the move and predicted a firestorm, according to Democratic sources.

That opinion was validated, at least for the moment, by events Thursday as Senate Republicans narrowly blocked cloture on Hagel’s nomination. Obama immediately slammed the filibuster — which could be broken after a 10-day congressional recess.

But an irked Obama is dead set on installing his pick at the Pentagon — even though the bitter battle over his confirmation is likely to leave lasting scars on his nominee at a time of looming military cuts and dangerous new developments in Iran and North Korea.

“We’ve never had a secretary of defense filibustered before … there are only a handful of instances in which there’s been any kind of filibuster of anybody,” the president said during a Google+ chat after the Senate vote.

“My expectation and hope is that Chuck Hagel … will be confirmed as our defense secretary,” he said. “It’s just unfortunate that this kind of politics intrudes at a time when I’m presiding over [a war in Afghanistan].

Senior White House officials predicted that a battered Hagel would manage to limp over the finish line and take the job of defense secretary later this month. But others pointed to the cost after weeks of absorbing criticism about his previous statements on Israel, his personal finances and unanswered questions about Obama’s personal response to the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks in Benghazi, Libya.

“It’s going to put him in a difficult position once he gets there,” said Bill Cohen, a former Republican senator from Maine who served as defense secretary under President Bill Clinton. “I’m sure there will be some lingering discontent on the part of some on the Hill. That, however, speaks to the process we’re talking about. ... [Read More}

rEpublicans and "Consevatives" Once Again Vying For Irrelevancy... ...

President Obama has nominated Chuck Hagel (R-Neb) for Secretary of Defense. As expected in a typical knee jerk reaction conservatives have come out in opposition to Hagel. Qualifications be damned as the only reason given are 1) his prior support for negotiation with Iran, and 2) Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) supports his nomination.

The Hill - The conservative American Future Fund group is questioning Sen. Charles Schumer's (D-N.Y.) decision to back former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) for secretary of Defense.

The group, which launched a media campaign earlier in the week, released a new ad Friday focusing on Schumer's decision to back Hagel.

On Tuesday, after meeting privately with Hagel a day earlier, Schumer said he supported Hagel for secretary of Defense. Schumer had previously refrained from saying whether he would support or oppose Hagel's nomination.

The American Future Fund ad, "How Badly" asks "how badly does Chuck Schumer want to be the Senate Majority Leader?"

Schumer is the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate.

"And what did President Obama promise him?" a voiceover in the ad continues. "After a career of supporting Israel, Schumer now backs Chuck Hagel for Defense Secretary. The Same Chuck Hagel who supported direct negotiations with Iran after Iran's president threatened to wipe Israel off the map. The same Chuck Hagel who complained about 'the Jewish lobby.' Even the liberal Washington Post writes 'Hagel is not the right choice for Defense Secretary.' "

The ad concludes: "No on Chuck Hagel."

Critics of Hagel for secretary of Defense have regularly cited his past comments accusing a "Jewish lobby" of strong-arming lawmakers. Opponents have also said Hagel is too soft on sanctions on Iran meant to deter the country from getting a nuclear bomb. Hagel has expressed regret for his comment about a "Jewish lobby," calling it a "poor choice of words."

The American Future Fund ad is part of a multi-pronged media campaign in opposition of Hagel for secretary of Defense.

American Future Fund spokesman Stuart Roy told The Hill on Wednesday that its anti-Hagel campaign would be "very visible nationwide" by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

Just the fact the Neocons and rEpublican party fake conservatives are speaking out against Mr. Hagel is enough to support his nomination for the position.

There is no reason to stand in opposition to this nomination. Other than to be obstructionists for the sole purpose of being obstructionists. Pathetic really...

The Clown Car of Cabinet Nominees

Looking at the most recent nominees for Cabinet positions, it seems as if a clown car pulled up to the Capitol where Jack Lew, John Kerry, Chuck Hagel, and John Brennan spilled out.

(1) John Brennan for CIA (see original post which contained the following info)

  • Does not understand the true nature of jihad and the threat it poses to us.
  • Referred to Jerusalem as "Al Quds."
  • Believes the 20% recidivism rate from those released from Guantanamo Bay "isn't that bad"
  • Said that that “violent extremists” are victims of “political, economic and social forces.”
  • ”The FBI gave a guided tour of one of our most sensitive counter-terrorism facilities to a known Hamas operative,” [Frank] Gaffney said. “It is clear that the cluelessness fostered by Mr. Brennan is causing an empowering of the wrong sorts of Muslims in America and endangering the American people.”
  • Judicial Watch...obtained documents...revealing that Brennan and Defense Department officials disclosed to Hollywood filmmakers the identity of the SEAL Team Six operator and commander involved in taking out Osama Bin Laden.

(2) Jack Lew for Treasury.  He possesses the most ridiculous signature know to man, and appears to accept no other way except his own.  According to Senator Jeff Session of Alabama:
“Lew, as the president’s budget director, appeared before Congress and  continued to insist that President Obama’s budget-which Lew had crafted-would  not add to the debt  of the United States,” Sessions said in the statement, calling Lew’s comments  “the most direct and important false assertion during my entire time in Washington.” (source)

(3) Chuck Hagel for Defense.
  • It appears that he seeks to eliminate the nuclear arsenal of the United States...unilaterally if necessary.  [Let us not forget what W. Cleon Skousen told us in "The Naked Communist" that "The Communists have created the illusion in free men's minds that 'the way to peace is through disarmament.'  We must not forget that this originated as a Communist slogan." (p. 263)]
"Hagel continued: “How can we preach to other countries that you can’t have nuclear weapons but we can and our allies can? There is no credibility, there’s no logic to that argument. And we have been losing on that argument.
“… I think and many people in the United States of America and Russia and in other parts of the world believe it has to go and that it is the elimination, the phasing out of nuclear weapons.”
Hagel argued that once nuclear weapons are eliminated “we can then, all leaders of all mankind, can start to concentrate more deliberately on the needs of the men and women and the children of their countries.”" (source)
"[S]enators from states with nuclear bases are questioning the defense secretary nominee’s role in the Global Zero commission that advocates eliminating all nuclear weapons and making unilateral strategic arms cuts..." (source)
“As a senator from a state that is home to two legs of the nuclear triad, I am particularly concerned about Senator Hagel’s support for additional, major reductions in U.S. nuclear forces, which I believe puts the United States at a severe disadvantage in a still-dangerous global military environment.” --Sen. John Hoeven (R., N.D.) (source)
  • He supports global health re-distribution:
"Hagel co-sponsored the Global Poverty Act, which would have imposed a new “tax” on the U.S. requiring the country to add 0.7 percent of the gross national product to its overall spending on humanitarian aid." (source)
  • He does not support unilateral sanctions against Iran, and "[h]e even voted against designating Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization at a time when they were supplying and supporting attacks on U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan." (source)
  • He sees moral equivalency in the Israel-Palestinian Conflict as evidenced through statements like “Both Israelis and Palestinians are trapped in a war not of their making.” (source)

(4) John Kerry for State.  Swift Boat Veterans.  Need I say more?
