Daily Mailreports an American college student who went missing while studying abroad in Rome was killed by a train.

Bates College junior John Durkin, 21, was last seen by friends at about 2.30am on Thursday, at a bar called Sloppy Sam’s.

Family members had flown from Rye, in New Hampshire, to Italy to help with the search, but his body was spotted in a tunnel by a passenger on a train on Thursday.

Durkin's body was removed from the tunnel, which runs under a large park between the Vatican and  Trastevere neighborhood in Rome, by Italian authorities, CBS News reported.

Italian railway authorities confirmed on Saturday that he had been killed by a train.

A statement from his university president, Clayton Spencer, said: 'This is a time of deep sadness for our community and for so many people who knew and loved John.

'We are profoundly sad and share the tremendous grief of his family.'

Bates head football coach Mark Harriman added:'John’s commitment to excellence in all phases of his life was inspirational to the other members of the squad and a major factor in the team’s success over the past three years.

Daily Mailreports snowboarder Vic Wild, a native of Wild Salmon, Washington, took home two gold medals in Sochi this week – only he did it for Russia rather than Team USA. 

American by birth, Russian by marriage and by choice, Wild completed a historic sweep of the Olympic snowboard parallel slalom events to give his adopted country a boost in the race to top the medals table.

Wild edged Zan Kosir of Slovenia by 0.11 seconds in Saturday's parallel slalom final to win his second gold medal of the games.

As Ukrainian protesters said they had taken control of government offices and President Viktor Yanukovich fled the city, angry civilians kicked and shouted at members of the government, and could be seen tussling with an alleged sniper.

'He's (Yanukovich) not here, none of his officials or anyone linked directly to the administration are here,' Ostap Kryvdyk, a protest leader inside the grounds of the administration building, said.

Crowds of people swarmed the streets of Kiev as the under-fire president said he had no intention of stepping down, despite calls for him to give up his seat.

NY Daily News reports a Venezuelan beauty queen and student demonstrator was fatally shot in the head during a political protest, making the fifth fatality from the country's ongoing political turmoil.

Genesis Carmona, 22, was photographed lying limp in the arms of a man riding a motorcycle after gunfire broke out at Tuesday's protest in the city of Valencia.

She was pronounced dead at a hospital Wednesday afternoon.

"How long are we going to live like this? How long do we have to tolerate this pressure, with them killing us?" a relative, who asked not to be named, said. "She only needed one more semester to graduate."

Dressed in a red checked lumberjack shirt and rust-coloured jeans, he shouted ‘beep beep!’ and giggled with delight while pushing a plastic motorbike around the living room of his family home.

Then, after lunch, a strange transformation occurred.

Max scampered upstairs to his bedroom with his 23-year-old mother, Lisa, and re-emerged several minutes later wearing a dark blue, knee-length dress decorated with pink flamingos.

He swiftly grabbed a blonde-haired doll, sat her in a pink plastic pram, and took her on a short walk, stopping only when it was time to pretend to breastfeed her.

Later in the afternoon, the child collected several more dolls, found a selection of pink toy cups and saucers, and staged an impromptu tea party.

Max, who turns two later this month and lives in Walsall, is being raised according to a radical technique known as ‘gender-neutral parenting’.

It means Lisa and her husband, Martin, 34, encourage him to wear both boys’ and girls’ clothes, and to play with conventionally female – as well as male – toys.

Rather than being worried if he decides not to play football, and asks instead for someone to paint his fingernails with glittery polish, they instead see it as a form of cute self-expression.

‘If Max wants to wear a pink tutu and fairy wings, then he can wear it,’ says Lisa. ‘He’s just expressing himself. I don’t want to put him in a certain box and treat him that way. I want to teach him to be whatever he wants to be. He can pick his own clothes and, as long as they’re warm enough for the winter, I’ll get him whatever he wants.’
