Charting the Mental Health of the Recovery

The Rise and Fall of the Middle Manager

The following chart shows nonfarm payrolls minus production and non-supervisory employees.

At first glance, this appears to be yet another trend failure. That is not the case though! There is a trend that nearly perfectly describes what is going on. I just need to alter the way the data is displayed so that you can see it better.

When using a log scale, constant exponential growth is seen as a straight line. The line in the chart above is certainly not straight. It is curving downwards. As seen in the following chart, it is curving downwards in a very consistent way. In fact, it is the exact same way that a baseball in flight would be curved downwards after it is hit into the air, with gravity being the constant. I'm using a 2nd order polynomial to show the path.

There are 42 million jobs here. I just don't see where the future growth will come from. These also tend to be the higher paying jobs that a person holding a college degree might have. Sigh.

The future's so bright I gotta... Oh, never mind. I give up.

Education and Critical Thinking Skills or, Progressive Indoctrination?...

by: Les Carpenter
Rational Nation USA
Liberty -vs-Tyranny

And they call the following EDUCATION? Forgive me please, but the Professor, if you can call him that in good conscience, seems to be a Brown Shirt involved in indoctrinating students into the Progressive ideology and creating as much class envy as possible.

There is no adjective to describe this other than PATHETIC. A raping of the contract Professors have with students, which of course is to educate with opposing views, challenge their critical thinking skills, and prepare them for active independent judgement as they enter the adult world of reality and hard knocks.

As Congress Considers Intervention Into the Syrian Civil War, Points Worth Considering...

Howard Fineman from the The Huffington Post makes many well reasoned points. In a nutshell, there are no easy answers with respect to Syria, or understanding the President's desire to take military action, almost unilaterally and without support from the world community (if you will). Yes, Secretary Kerry is certainly in a unenviable as well as tough position. Given what we know, and considering his job and who he reports to the Secretary has done a relatively good job of handling his responsibilities. I say this even as I reject Secretary Kerry's premises and rationale.

Hispanic Telemundo 63 Anchor Claims Discrimination Practices By Weigel Broadcasting And CBS 58 Management

Carlos Vergara

Vergara alleged discrimination patterns and practices at Weigel Broadcasting and WDJT-TV Channel CBS 58, including Telemundo 63.

By H. Nelson Goodson
September 6, 2013

Milwaukee, WI - On Friday, Attorney Cole White released a statement to Hispanic News Network U.S.A. (HNNUSA) that his client Telemundo 63 anchor Carlos Vergara for Weigel Broadcasting and WDJT-TV Channel CBS 58 had filed a discrimination claim in May with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The discrimination claim is expected to proceed in federal court as a possible class-action lawsuit.
Attorney White who was retained by Vergara in July says, that when Vergara was hired at CBS 58 almost three years ago, he was told that he would be anchoring for the Spanish language Telemundo 63 and would also be doing news reporting and anchoring for the English language news cast at CBS 58. Instead, several other less experienced Anglo anchors were given the opportunity to anchor and the CBS 58 management bypassed Vergara who is fluent in both English and Spanish. He has never been given an opportunity to anchor on CBS 58. Vergara became one of two anchors at Telemundo 63 who had to produce, translate, edit and report its news from CBS 58 for Telemundo 63 compared to the CBS 58 anchor news cast which has about a 25 member crew to produce, edit and do reporting, including its own reporters on the street. Telemundo 63 has no reporters on the street to cover and gather news from the Latino community.
Attorney White said, that when Vergara had attempted to address some of the problems at Telemundo 63 and that it doesn't really speak to the community its supposed to cover, Genie Garner, the News Director for CBS 58 had said, "we don't care about them anyway." Garner has also allegedly referred to the Latino community as illegal aliens and that the Weigel corporate executives have said, that she is in the helm at CBS 58 and that they don't care who she offends, according to Vergara's attorney.
Attorney White says, because of the "pervasive racism and private bullying atmosphere that is tolerated all the way down to the Weigel corporate offices in Chicago," Telemundo and CBS 58 haven't been able to keep Hispanic employees for more than two years at the station.
Vergara, White and the EEOC tried to resolved the issue with Weigel representatives at a mediation meeting, but negotiations broke down and nothing was resolved.
In the past decade, there have been a lot of turnover of Telemundo 63 anchors who haven't stayed for long at CBS 58, allegedly because of a pattern and practices of discrimination at Weigel Broadcasting.
HNNUSA on Friday attempted to contact both Jim Hall, the General Manager at CBS 58 and Garner, the News Director at CBS 58 through an e-mail request to comment about Vergara's claims, but they haven't responded as of yet.
Vergara had taken a temperary leave, but is expected back at Telemundo 63 soon.
Vergara has more than 18 years of experience in news reporting, producing and anchoring. Vergara's career includes producing in New York City, shooting news in Maryland and Georgia, reporting and anchoring in California, Virginia, Miami and Milwaukee. He also worked for the RCN TV Network in Bogota, Colombia and had been anchoring the nightly news on Telemundo 63 in Spanish, according to CBS 58 website.
Last week, JSonline reported that Attorney Nola Hitchcock Cross confirmed that Shari Dunn, an African-American anchor for CBS WDJT Channel 58 and Weigel Broadcasting had filed a complaint against Weigel for discrimination because of her race. Dunn is claiming, "a possible pattern" that male counterparts are paid higher than females and "a culture" that male opinions at the station were valued more than females.
She filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Equal Rights Division and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Dunn's attorney is expected to file a class-action discrimination case in federal court.
Dunn is a graduate of Nicollet High School and Marquette University. She joined CBS 58 in February 2009.

Syria: wrong war, wrong time, wrong president

Syria: wrong war, wrong time, wrong president

Syria: wrong war, wrong time, wrong president

America is on the eve of another mistake. Arm twisting, not to dissimilar to the efforts made for Obamacare, have resurfaced to force passage of Congressional authorization to attack Syria. Will President Obama grease the fingers of members of Congress to obtain their vote, as he has done under other circumstances, will be revealed as the process moves forward. Secretary of State John Kerry has been roaming the media for support to rage yet another war in the Middle East. He has been challenged and in some cases impugned for his stance on the Syrian dilemma. John Kerry, no stranger to controversy, has provided quasi answers to direct questions concerning chemical weapons used on Syrian civilians. His success in moving Obama’s agenda forward appears to be failing. Recent reports on Drudge and Fox news indicate there are not enough members of either house willing to stick their necks into another noose for Obama, as they did with the tragedy called Obamacare. President Obama has reluctantly sought Congressional approval for his pending folly. Many commentators suspect Obama wants shared responsibility with the legislative branch in case events do not pan out in America’s favor. Most recent statistics note over 100,000 dead since the Syrian civil conflict began. People displaced from their homes numbers one to two million. Aside from the carnage, cities have been devastated by sustained bombings and brutal combat. Syria and its President harbor no fondness for America. Without this civil conflict raging, Syrians would once again turn their attentions to destroying Israel and American interests. The logical question to ask: Why is Obama pushing for intervention at this late date? He claims someone must hold Syria responsible for using chemical agents on a civilian population. Reports indicate chemical weapons may have been used several times in the past 30 months, without a whimper from the White House. There may be more reasons that have not been revealed by the Obama Administration for this poorly defined mission. Obama’s ineffectual style of management, for this war effort to nowhere, can be viewed on many levels. He has literally told Assad what his plans are for a potential attack.  There are no clear cut goals established by the President and no exit strategy. Obama requested permission for a brief assault, yet his Congressional minions are requesting a minimum of ninety days. No boots on the ground is another fallacy thrown into the mix. America is about to make a bigger mistake than electing the present occupant of the White House. This one will cost the lives of too many innocents to be worth the incursion. Congress should vote down any request for a Syrian attack. If Obama then goes it alone, the ramifications could be enough to draw impeachment charges against him. Let us all hope saner minds prevail. America Is Incompatible With Freedom ... J. D. Longstreet

America Is Incompatible With Freedom ... J. D. Longstreet
AmericaIs Incompatible With Freedom
A Commentary by J. D. Longstreet
**********************

There is a growing fear for The Republic in America, especially among the folks on the conservative side of the political spectrum.  I count myself among those who perceive a growing, ominous, threat aimed directly toward  the foundation of our constitutional, representative, republic.

Our government has nearly dropped all pretense of acting as true representatives of the people.  More and more we see their true mantle -- that of  "overseers" on The Great Plantation known as America.

For those of us who have lived for many decades the transition is crystal clear.   To us, it reads like a road map with photographs.  Clear as a bell.

Numerous times today, as current events unfold, I recall having seen news reels in the movies (as a lad) of the very same event, only many decades ago with different people and in different lands --  lands ruled by Fascists and Nazis and Communists -- where the citizens were enslaved to the state.

America was so angered she rose up in that righteous anger and mustered her armies and allies and  marched to freedom's rescue.

In that war against despotism America had no thought of anything less than total victory.  You don't "treat" a rabid dog.  You kill it.

Now, here we are, just shy of three-quarters of a century after our global effort to save he world for freedom --  and the shoe is on the other foot.  America, herself, is in deep danger from despotism ... internal despotism.

The change from a free state to a police state in America has been incremental in nature but strengthened as each new increment was introduced, accepted, and made a part of the so-called "new normal."

Each decade, as more and more of the old guard, those of us who have served as sentinels of freedom for most of our lives, are removed from the "active" list by age and/or adverse health, the speed with which America is falling from the pinnacle increases.  I sometimes think that by reason of our having lived so long as free men and women, we tend to feel the increased lost of freedom more readily and, yes, even deeper than our younger fellow Americans.

Alas, in a society which does not celebrate age and wisdom but youth and vitality, our opinions are not sought and, when offered, are too often spurned.   Instead of assignment to the vanguard in defense of freedom we are, in my opinion, too often relegated to the rear guard.

If these remarks sound a bit like sour grapes, I assure you they are not.  They are, in fact, an expression of sadness.  A sadness born of frustration as a result of witnessing the swift but agonizing death of a great nation, likely the greatest nation ever to have existed on this planet.

When nearly half of America's citizens have no idea of the danger they and their country are in and (I'm convinced) if they DID, they simply would not care, there is little hope of any rousement to rescue their once great country from the gutter where she is now wallowing in disgusting circumstances.
The religious community in America bears much of the blame for America's demise.  Having forsaken scripture alone, sola scriptura, the practice of the Christian faith in America has been so diluted by Marxism as to render our churches more social club than houses of worship.

Setting the moral standards for a rebellious people was, apparently, too difficult and so it was abandoned in favor of political correctness, which is nothing more than thinly disguised Marxism.

Mainline Christian denominations in America fell first -- and fell quickly.  Standing silently on the sidelines of American history they have nothing left to offer when they themselves have intentionally chosen a course away from God while embracing human secularism and Marxism's "social justice" as worthy substitutes for Almighty Providence.

They created their own stumbling blocks.  They have no choice but to huddle behind them now until the state declares them "closed."

For now, only America's evangelical religious community remains true to the scriptures and to the fundamental belief that God had more than a passing interest in the founding of America and its mission to the world of introducing light into the global darkness.

Now, however, America's own light has gone out.

Today, America, now rotten to the core, is a corrupt, hedonist, depraved, society soaked in -- and dripping -- perversions of every kind.  Decency finds little room to exist on our shores any longer.  We re drowning in a cesspool of our own making.  We are no longer able to identify that which is moral, right, proper, or good.  We are corrupt nationally by reason of our individual corruption.   The stench of our debauchery rises from our lack of morals, from our intemperance, and, yes, our depraved sensuality.

We Americans have either forgotten, or we refuse to remember, that America was not founded for a people such as those who live here today.  Founding Father, and later President, John Adams warned us: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."  No, dear reader, America was never meant to be the home of an immoral, amoral, people, people lacking any sense of moral standards or principles such as inhabit her shores in 2013.

Our national honor and our national virtue has been besmirched by our leaders  and Americahas now become an international laughing stock.

... And we have NOT hit bottom yet! It WILLget worse.

I'd like you to think for a moment of our current crop of leaders in the three houses of our national government, from the President, to the Congress, to the US Supreme Court.  Hold those thoughts while you read the following written by a former President James Madison:  "The aim of every political Constitution, is or ought to be first to obtain for rulers men who possess most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue, the common good of society; and in the next place, to take the most effectual precautions for keeping them virtuous whilst they continue to hold their public trust."

Now.  Reexamine the thoughts you have of our current national leadership, again -- THIS TIME against the backdrop of the quote from James Madison above.  Pay careful attention to the phrase:  "to take the most effectual precautions for "KEEPING THEM VIRTUOUS WHILST THEY CONTINUE TO HOLD THEIR PUBLIC TRUST."  Have we done that?  Most assuredly -- WE HAVE NOT!

If we are truthful with ourselves, we will admit that it is us, the American citizen, who bears the guilt for the pitifully inadequate leadership we have in our nation today.   We chose badly because, in part, the criteria for choosing is so skewed toward supporting those who appeal to our emotions rather than to our common sense.  About the only thing true we can say about our current crop of leaders is that they do, in fact, reflect the character of those who voted for them.

And THAT is killing this once great nation!

Listen to another founding Father, Patrick Henry:  "Bad men cannot make good citizens. It is when a people forget God that tyrants forge their chains. A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom. No free government, or the blessings of liberty, can be preserved to any people but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality, and virtue; and by a frequent recurrence to fundamental principles."

Patrick Henry also said something I think is apropos as America stands at the threshold of another involvement in a war that may well spark a Third World War.  Remembering that America has not won a war since the Second World War, it is chilling to read these words:  ". . . Virtue, morality, and religion. This is the armor, my friend, and this alone that renders us invincible. These are the tactics we should study. If we lose these, we are conquered, fallen indeed . . . so long as our manners and principles remain sound, there is no danger."

Patrick Henry had no idea, none at all, that less than 250 years from the day he made those remarks the military of his beloved country would march to war beneath the banners of multiple gods rather than the single banner of the one true God. (And we wonder why so many of our soldiers return to their homes with their minds muddled and broken?)

Democratic governments are only as strong, moral, and enduring as the people who fuel their existence.  Two centuries is the accepted life-span of a democratic government.  Americahas already exceeded her life expectancy.

Consider this:

In 1887 Alexander Tyler , a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.” Democracies always commit suicide.

A democracy, in the throws of the destruction of a Republic, will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover the difference between self-interest and selfishness. The viral symptoms are the erosion of fundamentals, the symptoms being:

They will vote themselves ever increasing and generous unsustainable gifts from the public treasury.

From that moment on, the majority will always vote for the candidates who pander, promise and deliver the most benefits from the public treasury, The Federal Reserve, the Great, no collateral, Fiat Money Printing Press.

The historic promise and guarantee is that every democracy will finally collapse over loose, cynical fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.”

“The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years, pray tell, how old is America?

During those 200 years, these nations, focus on America, always progressed through the following remarkable, consistent, repeatable, and stubborn sequence:

    From any form of bondage to some form of spiritual faith;

    From spiritual faith to great courage, audacity, valor and bravery;

    From that field of courage to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness;

    From freedom to sustaining wealth;

    From wealth and abundance to self gratification and complacency;

    From self gratification, complacency to apathy and lethargy;

    From lethargy to dependence and reliance;

    From reliance back into bondage.”

It is clear -- even to the most accidental observer -- that America is quickly moving back into the bondage stage.

Our own homegrown government now produces laws, rules, and regulations that would have made Great Britain's King George flinch and and stomp red-faced from the room. King George's powers pale in comparison to the powers our "elected" President has taken unto himself.  And yet -- Boston Harborremains startlingly free of floating crates of tea. (That fact alone speaks volumes as to why Americawill not be saved.)

America has, I believe, lost her soul. Why do I say that?  Listen again to President John Adams:  "Libertycan no more exist without virtue and independence than the body can live and move without a soul."  The loss of our liberty should be the single -- and most important -- clue to understanding HOWAmerica lost her soul.

Yes, modern AmericaIS incompatible with freedom.  Ben Franklin said: "Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters."   One is compelled to ask:  Is Americaacquiring the "new masters" she needs?

As America spirals downward from freedom into slavery it is the painful task of her few remaining patriots to record her missteps, her out right mistakes, and her oft times bull-headed decisions to defy logic -- and even God, himself -- in an attempt to enlighten and instruct future generations.. Much like the legend of Atlantis, the legend of Americawill become a haunting reminder of what COULD have been had not Lady Liberty's torch been outed.

BUT -- for the moment patriots have their hands full -- dealing with the pain of losing their country.

7-year-old Girl Reported Missing From Juárez Has Been Found

Abril Gissel Sánchez Saldaña

A statewide amber alert had been issued in the disappearance of a 7-year-old child from the city of Juárez in Mexico.

By H. Nelson Goodson
September 6, 2013

Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico - A missing report was filed for Abril Gissel Sánchez Saldaña, 7, who disappeared last Tuesday and a statewide amber alert was issued in Chihuahua. Saldaña who was last seen wearing a blue blouse and blue pants with white stripes, including tennis with rose and gray colors was located about four hours later after she disappeared. Authorities from the Juárez district attorney's office located Saldaña in the Campestre Virreyes neighborhood where she was last seen.
Apparently, Saldaña walked out from her home and her parents quickly filed a missing report when they discovered she had disappeared. Authorities questioned her parents to determine what led them to file a missing person report so quickly, according to El Diario.MX in Juárez.
People continued to post her missing report on Facebook and has gone viral, despite that she has been located and reunited with her parents.

This Is Not 1982!

Click to enlarge.

Good grief. We've fallen out of the trend channel to the downside and yet we're repeatedly told that the future is so bright that we need to wear shades. I guess we can just pretty much assume that we'll never reenter the channel again? Seriously?

As seen in the chart, initial claims are just about as bright right now as they have ever been (perhaps even more so if the trend channel is any indicator). They were similarly bright in 2000 and 2007! They were not bright in 1982 though, and that's what made 1982 such a good year to swing for the fences. Things could only get brighter. In hindsight, the brightness increased enormously over the next 18 years!

For a full year, 0.7% of the covered workers were sent to the unemployment lines each week back in 1982. Each week! Now that was dim! Compounded over 52 weeks, that gave each worker roughly a 30% chance of becoming unemployed. Ouch! Think that could never happen again?

I have a reasonable concern that the trend channel in this chart will ultimately hold, and that's all it would take for me to shy away from risk taking. The channel is also very consistent with my long-term permabear attitude (since 2004). That's especially true if most investors start to believe that this economy can actually tolerate higher interest rates, as is continually repeated by the mainstream financial news.

See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over again for the truth to sink in... to kind of catapult the propaganda. - George W. Bush, May 24, 2005

Propaganda

Propaganda is a form of communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of the community toward some cause or position by presenting only one side of an argument. Propaganda statements may be partly false and partly true. Propaganda is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the chosen result in audience attitudes.

"Way Too Bright" Supernova Eludes Astronomers

But what if the supernova was not actually as bright as it seemed?

"Way too bright" economy eludes economists too! Really bright things can get dimmer. Really dim things can get brighter.

This is neither rocket science nor investment advice.
