pinterest challenge - dipped in gold

I made a promise to myself the last time I saw the Pinterest Challenge, that the next time it came around I would join in the fun.

So when Katie, Sherry, Kate and Michelle told me it was that time of year I did a little happy jig. But my dancing stopped when the hubs pointed out that I was "already in the middle of 4 other big projects. Do you really want to add another one?"

Must he always be so practical?

I did see his point though. But hey, not everything on Pinterest needs to be big. So I decided I'd do something that I could tackle during craft time with my daughter.

Resume happy jig.

The goal, for me, was to pick something very different. Something that made me say 'I love it' and 'that is nothing like anything I have in my house'.

So when I saw this fab mason jar turned disco vase by The Knotty Bride I knew I'd found my project.  And how thrilled would my 4-year-old, Amelia, be to help me with glue and glitter?! Mom of the Month club, are you reading this?
The tutorial is simple and straightforward, perfect for the likes of me.

I got my supplies and used a leftover glass vase from Eve's birthday party as my test subject.
Everything went swimmingly until the glue brush broke and fell onto the table and then into my lap, slopping glue all over everything. This would never happen to a serial craft person I'm sure. You are lucky I love you Martha, otherwise I would have thrown some of my cussing in your direction.
With glue all over the jar, the table and myself, we got to the fun part, the glitter. I used the left over cake box from my birthday to contain the glitterness.
We rolled and rolled until we got this.
It worked! And it was fun and messy and quick. Amelia quickly claimed it as 'hers' so I decided to do another using my very favorite bottle.

I save these bottles from a bar that the hubs and I always visit on date night. They make a blissful G&T. And the bottles are a perfect shape for a single flower. Win win.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat. And I have a lovely glitter tonic bottle.
A perfect way to honor my favorite drink and event - date night.

When we finished Amelia said "oh mommy - they are the most pretty gold dancing balls!". (I think she means disco ball. Don't even get me started on how proud I am that she knows what a disco ball is.)

It was a fun afternoon. And I now have something funky and different from anything else in my house. It also brings out the gold in Mary Katherine Gallagher the Owl . I love it.

And how can you argue with the sparkle it gives when the sun catches it.
Disco.

Thanks ladies, for encouraging me to get my craft on!

Be sure to visit all of the Pinterest Challenge hosts today and see all of the great projects inspired by the time sucker good friend we call Pinterest.

You’re not special’ graduation speech sparks buzz

All of this is as it should be, because none of you is special.
You are not special. You are not exceptional.
Contrary to what your U9 soccer trophy suggests, your glowing seventh grade report card, despite every assurance of a certain corpulent purple dinosaur, that nice Mister Rogers and your batty Aunt Sylvia, no matter how often your maternal caped crusader has swooped in to save you . . . you’re nothing special.
Yes, you’ve been pampered, cosseted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble-wrapped. Yes, capable adults with other things to do have held you, kissed you, fed you, wiped your mouth, wiped your bottom, trained you, taught you, tutored you, coached you, listened to you, counselled you, encouraged you, consoled you and encouraged you again.
You’ve been nudged, cajoled, wheedled and implored. You’ve been feted and fawned over and called sweetie pie. Yes, you have.
And, certainly, we’ve been to your games, your plays, your recitals, your science fairs. Absolutely, smiles ignite when you walk into a room, and hundreds gasp with delight at your every tweet.
And now you’ve conquered high school . . . and, indisputably, here we all have gathered for you, the pride and joy of this fine community . . .
But do not get the idea you’re anything special. Because you’re not.
The empirical evidence is everywhere, numbers even an English teacher can’t ignore . . . Across the country no fewer than 3.2 million seniors are graduating about now from more than 37,000 high schools. That’s 37,000 valedictorians . . . 37,000 class presidents . . . 92,000 harmonizing altos . . . 340,000 swaggering jocks . . . 2,185,967 pairs of Uggs.
But why limit ourselves to high school? After all, you’re leaving it. So think about this: even if you’re one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you. Imagine standing somewhere over there on Washington Street on Marathon Monday and watching 6,800 yous go running by.
And consider for a moment the bigger picture: your planet, I’ll remind you, is not the centre of its solar system, your solar system is not the centre of its galaxy, your galaxy is not the centre of the universe. In fact, astrophysicists assure us the universe has no centre; therefore, you cannot be it. Neither can Donald Trump . . . which someone should tell him . . . although that hair is quite a phenomenon.

We live in America. Free from fear of tyranny of the police state. Imbued with certain rights and legal safeguards protecting us from the abuse of authority. Or so we thought...

Congressman Ed Markey

July 9, 2012 - Congressman releases first-ever accounting of responses from wireless carriers that indicate sweeping personal data requests from law enforcement agencies.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the first-ever accounting of its kind, Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass) has found that in 2011, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies made more than 1.3 million requests of wireless carriers for the cell phone records of consumers, and that number is increasing every year. Last month, Rep. Markey queried nine mobile wireless carriers about their policies and practices for sharing their customers’ mobile phone information with law enforcement agencies after a report in the New York Times reported that law enforcement was routinely requesting consumers cell phone records, sometimes with little judicial oversight and no consumer knowledge. The responses received by Rep. Markey were startling in the volume and scope of requests made by law enforcement, including requests for “cell tower dumps” in which carriers provide all the phones numbers of cell users that connect with a tower during a discreet period of time, including information on innocent people. According to the carriers, all requests were made pursuant to a legal warrant or granted due to an emergency situation in which an individual was in imminent danger.

"We cannot allow privacy protections to be swept aside with the sweeping nature of these information requests, especially for innocent consumers,” said Rep. Markey, senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee and co-Chair of the Congressional Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus. “Law enforcement agencies are looking for a needle, but what are they doing with the haystack? We need to know how law enforcement differentiates between records of innocent people, and those that are subjects of investigation, as well as how it handles, administers, and disposes of this information.” {Read More}

Whether liberal or conservative, republican or democrat, independent or libertarian this should send chills up your spine. We should all be thankful for Congressman Markey's publication of this information. In the aftermath of 911, the subsequent enactment of the Patriot Act and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, we are, as some warned losing our right to privacy and perhaps the protection of this right under our laws.

The slippery slope GWB put the nation on will continue to get more slippery as Leviathan finds new and ever more intrusive ways to monitor the activities of the citizens of the nation. Which of course ultimately leads to more control and a further loss of liberties.

George Oswell's 1984 is arriving in America. Albeit a bit later than he had imagined. The question is; will we stand for any further erosion of our rights?

With a Majority Believing Obama Has Changed the Country for the Worse, and Mittens Highly Suspect, It is Time for an Alternative...

The Thinker Believes It Time For the Alternative

It comes as no surprise.

THE HILL - Two-thirds of likely voters say President Obama has kept his 2008 campaign promise to change America — but it’s changed for the worse, according to a sizable majority.

A new poll for The Hill found 56 percent of likely voters believe Obama’s first term has transformed the nation in a negative way, compared to 35 percent who believe the country has changed for the better under his leadership.

The results signal broad voter unease with the direction the nation has taken under Obama’s leadership and present a major challenge for the incumbent Democrat as he seeks reelection this fall.

Conducted for The Hill by Pulse Opinion Research, the poll comes in the wake of last month’s Supreme Court decision that upheld the primary elements of Obama’s signature healthcare legislation.

It found 68 percent of likely voters — regardless of whether they approve or disapprove of Obama — believe the president has substantially transformed the country since his 2009 inauguration.

The feeling that Obama has changed the country for the worse is strongest among Republicans, at 91 percent, compared to 71 percent of Democrats who support Obama’s brand of change.

Strikingly, 1-in-5 Democrats say they feel Obama has changed the United States for the worse.

Compared to the sentiment about Obama’s impact, fewer people see presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney as a candidate who will change the country dramatically if elected.

Still, 50 percent of people think Romney will bring a “significant” level of change — a finding that may reflect the desire among anti-Obama voters for a reversal of the president’s policies. {Read More}

With the country in a state of dissatisfaction over inept leadership for the last 13 years and 6 months by both major parties wouldn't it make sense to consider an alternative?

Gary Johnson and the Case For A New Direction, Including the Protest Vote...

by: Les Carpenter

Liberty -vs- Tyranny

Gary Johnson,  LP Candidate for President 2012 - Washington Times Photo

Politico has Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party candidate for president chances at around zero. I agree. But then that really isn't the point. Certainly not in my considered opinion anyway.

In a time when Americans find much about both major party candidates distasteful, and in some cases outright unacceptable, the concept of a third alternative to the status qua can be intriguing. Indeed for some it offers the hope of real change. Rational change that has been proven effective in the State of New Mexico by an effective two tern Governor, Gary Johnson.

Candidate Johnson
, as reported by Politico is not interested in the protest vote. While thismay play well with those who do not view themselves specifically as protestors the "protest" vote is a critical part of the equation if we are to turn this country on the track of reasonable and sustainable political and economic growth in the future.

I certainly view myself as a "protest" vote. I protest both what the republican party and the democratic party have come to stand for. Neither party can be trusted to represent the interests of "the great" American middle class any longer. Nor can either be trusted to make decision that are in the best long range rational interests of the country and its people.

2012 is indeed a pivotal election in our countries history. Our future as a democratic republic as well as a nation with the economic engine for growth and prosperity may very well be determined by the results in November of this year. Given the major party candidates the prospect does not look encouraging regardless of who is found sitting in the Oval Office in January 2013.

Sure, one can be safe, voting for the known quantity. Which means more than ever before choosing between the "lesser of two evils." A choice true American patriots must cringe at, and therefore take a bold and decisive step to vote principle and vote for liberty, rather than the eventual tyranny either major party will bring to the people.

Mr. Johnson may not be looking for or seeking the "protest" vote, and that is fine. But I, and millions of patriots like me are certainly free to say hop aboard the liberty train and see where it takes you. For all who are disenchanted with both major parties, for those who realize the elephant train and the donkey train will ultimately take you to the brink of the same cliff, for those who believe America can do better than either major party candidate is offering, then consider this... Gary Johnson may not win the next election, but if he generates enough support it is just possible real change will occur non the less. Most importantly a strong showing will undoubtedly build the momentum for a viable, strong, and vibrant Libertarian Party.

Oh, I almost forgot, be sure to read the article that inspired this post. Please be sure to check out all the links as they are indeed to difference sites.

From One Extreme To the Moderate...

DNC Chairperson Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Wasserman Schultz getting it about one 1/4 right again...

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) on Sunday dismissed the idea that sluggish job growth would discourage minority voters from the polls this November.

Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, said that the policies of the presumptive GOP nominee, Mitt Romney, on issues like immigration reform would be even worse for minorities.

“When it comes to policies like immigration reform, Mitt Romney is the most extreme presidential candidate on immigration policy and that is why there is a 40-point deficit between him and President Obama among Hispanic-Americans,” Wasserman Schultz said on Fox News Sunday.

She also said that African-Americans would have been “devastated” by Romney’s preference to not rescue the U.S. auto industry.

The Labor Department said Friday that the economy added only 80,000 jobs in June, and the unemployment rate stayed steady at 8.2 percent. But the unemployment rate for blacks was 14.4 percent, and stood around 11 percent for Hispanics.

Wasserman Schultz acknowledged, like President Obama on Friday, that the economy still has a ways to go. {Read More}

The presidential election is just around the corner. As is to be expected there will be market manipulation to help the incumbent's reelection bid as well as media bias all around in the hopes of influencing the outcome of the election in the preferred direction.

I must say I'll certainly continue to welcome the relief at the pump. All the while knowing my vote goes independent of the prices at the pump as well as realizing prices WILL begin to rise again following the election. Just like most people do methinks...

Former Utah Governor and Republican Presidential Hopeful Jon Huntsman Announces He Will Not Be Attending National Convention...

by: Les Carpenter

Liberty -vs- Tyranny

Like I just mentioned in the prior post...

The Salt Lake Tribune - ... former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman won’t attend next month’s Republican National Convention or future GOP gatherings until the party starts to tackle the "bigger" issues.

"I will not be attending this year’s convention, nor any Republican convention in the future," Huntsman said, "until the party focuses on a bigger, bolder, more confident future for the United States — a future based on problem solving, inclusiveness, and a willingness to address the trust deficit, which is every bit as corrosive as our fiscal and economic deficits."

Huntsman had racked up two national delegates with his third-place finish in New Hampshire and another from the Texas primary, a point that could have guaranteed him a speaking role.

The former Utah governor was uninvited to a Republican National Committee event in Florida in March after he suggested that the nation needed a third-party candidate who offered an alternative to the Republican and Democratic options.

In a statement this week, Huntsman said he wanted his party to return to its moorings that mirrored his last-minute campaign theme of "Country First." {Read More}

I always liked the guy. He is absolutely positively correct in saying we need a viable third party and a viable third party candidate.

As Rational Reasoned Individuals Leave the Conservative Movement... GOP Bears Responsibilty

by: Les Carpenter
Rational Nation USA
Liberty -vs- Tyranny

Reuters

I used to proudly call myself an independent conservative. Back when conservatives actually offered a cohesive, rational, and defensible national agenda directed at making America better. Somehow, don't ask me how the Republican party has managed to cause many intelligent and capable individuals who supported conservatism and the Republican party to look for other alternatives. Sadly it appears the party "brass" is either 1) incapable of, or 2) unwilling to recognize what it needs to change within the party to bring the many who have left it, as well as the conservative movement back to the fold.

Federal Appeals Court Judge Richard Posner, a Reagan appointee has described how the current Republican party has in fact made him less conservative.

NPR - Judge Richard Posner, a conservative on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago, has long been one of the nation's most respected and admired legal thinkers on the right. But in an interview with NPR, he expressed exasperation at the modern Republican Party, and confessed that he has become "less conservative" as a result.

"I've become less conservative since the Republican Party started becoming goofy," he said.

Posner, who was appointed to the appeals court by Reagan, speculated that the leaks about the deliberations over the national health care law — which are apparently designed to discredit Chief Justice John Roberts' opinion upholding the law — would backfire. "I think these right-wingers who are blasting Roberts are making a very serious mistake," he said.

"Because if you put [yourself] in his position ... what's he supposed to think? That he finds his allies to be a bunch of crackpots? Does that help the conservative movement? I mean, what would you do if you were Roberts? All the sudden you find out that the people you thought were your friends have turned against you, they despise you, they mistreat you, they leak to the press. What do you do? Do you become more conservative? Or do you say, 'What am I doing with this crowd of lunatics?' Right? Maybe you have to re-examine your position."

Judge Posner certainly gets little to no argument from me.

Reuters - A conservative federal judge appointed by Ronald Reagan said in an interview published Thursday that the Republican Party has gone “goofy” and that “these right-wingers who are blasting [Chief Justice John] Roberts are making a very serious mistake.”

“I mean, what would you do if you were Roberts?” Judge Richard Posner, of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, told NPR. “All of a sudden you find out that the people that you thought were your friends have turned against you, they despise you, they mistreat you, they leak to the press, what do you do? Do you become more conservative? Or do you say, ‘What am I doing with this crowd of lunatics?’”

He was referring, of course, to conservative backlash over Roberts’s opinion upholding President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Posner said “there’s been a real deterioration in conservative thinking” over the past 10 years...

Indeed...

GOP Mitt Romney Lies And Fake Facts

GOP Mitt Romney Lies And Fake Facts

Lee A. Saunders

Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan once famously told an opponent in a debate: "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts." I was reminded of that last Thursday when former corporate raider Mitt Romney, who made millions out-sourcing American jobs to foreign countries, expressed his opinion on the Supreme Court's decision upholding Obamacare. In just one paragraph of his speech, Romney made six claims that bear no relation to the real world. He created "fake-facts" about health care reform and totally distorted the law's real impact.

This is an old Karl Rove campaign tactic -- make things up -- on steroids. It needs to be exposed. 1. Romney said Obamacare "cuts Medicare, by approximately $500 billion." This claim is meant to scare seniors, but it is simply false. PolitiFact.com has this to say about this bogus claim: "The bill doesn't take money out of the current Medicare budget but, rather, attempts to slow the program's future growth, curtailing just over $500 billion in anticipated spending increases over the next 10 years."

Those savings come from a variety of administrative changes and things like requiring Medicare Advantage plans to reduce their inflated costs. The law makes no cuts to guaranteed Medicare benefits. In fact, it increases Medicare benefits by improving the prescription drug benefit and by making cancer screenings and other preventive services available without a co-pay. 2. Romney said Obamacare "raises taxes on the American people by approximately $500 billion." False.

In fact, families across the nation will save money as a result of the Obamacare reforms, such as state-based exchanges that come online in 2014. Families who purchase private health insurance through these exchanges will save up to $2,300 each year on their health care spending. Millions of Americans already see real savings as their out-of-pocket costs go down to zero for preventive care like flu shots or cancer screenings. 3. Romney says Obamacare "adds trillions to our deficits and to our national debt." False. In fact, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that Obamacare will reduce the national deficit by $210 billion over the next 10 years. 4. Romney says Obamacare will force up to 20 million Americans to "lose the insurance they currently have." False. Rather than losing insurance, millions of Americans will get insurance for the first time. CBO and the Joint Economic Committee estimate that the number of people without health insurance coverage will be reduced by 30 million to 33 million by 2016 if the states implement the law as intended. 5. Romney says Obamacare is "a job-killer." False.

It takes a lot of nerve for a politician who has endorsed the job-killing agenda of Paul Ryan and the House Republicans to try to label health care reform as a job-killer. In fact, one recent study suggests that the lower growth in health care costs through Obamacare will create 250,000 to 400,000 thousand new jobs in many industries annually throughout the next decade. 6. Romney says "Obamacare puts the federal government between you and your doctor." False.

Obamacare removes the insurance companies from their position between you and your doctor. Remember, under Obamacare, insurance companies can no longer end your health coverage if you become ill or deny you coverage because of a pre-existing condition. And insurance companies will have to spend 80 percent of the money they take in on health care - not on administrative costs or CEO salaries - and refund the money to their customers if they don't meet the target. Before the end of the summer, 12.8 million Americans will receive rebates because their insurance company spent too much of their premium dollars on administrative costs or CEO bonuses.

What Mitt Romney is doing should be clear to everyone. His campaign has done some polling on what people don't like and they have decided to attribute all those things to Obamacare, even when they bear no relation to reality. These are "fake-facts" designed to make an honest debate impossible. They are an insult to the intelligence of the American people and should be repudiated by any American who recognizes the value of a true debate about real facts. It is clear that Romney and his allies have decided not to discuss Obamacare factually.

They know that if they told the truth about the law, the public would not support their efforts to overturn it. Instead, they are creating a totally false picture of the legislation - they are inventing their own "fake-facts" - and hope to deceive the American public into opposing the far-reaching reforms that Americans have fought so hard to win over the decades.

Pay attention as the campaign goes forward. When you hear Romney and other politicians say these things, tell your friends and coworkers that they are spreading lies. They are out of touch with reality. What they are doing is a disgrace. Don't let them get away with it.
