A Commentary by J. D. Longstreet
***************
A nationwide black market for guns, especially illegal so-called "assault weapons," is being developed as I write these words.
Now, I have no "proof" of that. It's what we used to call "common sense." (One could learn from history -- if one was so inclined.)
If we learned anything at all from Prohibition, it was that decreasing supply does absolutely NOTHING to decrease demand. In fact. It could be argued that decreasing supply actually INCREASES demand, especially if that which is in short supply is also ILLEGAL It's that "forbidden fruit" thingy with which we human beings are cursed. Tell us we CAN'T have something -- and we want that something more than we ever did before. It is derived, I think, from our rebellious spirit. It is a natural phenomena. We can't help ourselves. See, we come wired that way.
Taking guns away from Americans is about as dumb an idea as our political leaders have ever had! And BOY, that is saying a LOT. I've been on this earth for well over seventy years, and I gotta tell you, that is the dumbest bunch, in Washington, DC, America has ever had the misfortune to endure!
Wait 'til the gun running across our borders begins. I mean running guns NORTH from Mexico and South from Canada and slipping up the waterways in the little inlets and coves along the southeastern and Gulf coasts. Many of those smuggling routes have been long established by drug runners. Do not think for one moment they will not be used to run guns into America for they most certainly will be.
Now here's the thing: Gun runners will have the assistance of the, well, you know, honest, everyday, salt of the earth, "average" American citizens. They will not be restrained by the "sin factor" as they were for drugs and booze. No, we have documented evidence that even Christ endorsed weapons for self defense. (Luke Chapter 22 verses 36 through 38: " 36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37: For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38: And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.")
Then there is the DIY crowd. The "do it yourself" bunch. These are the folks who will retire to their basement or garage workshop and exit sometime later with a fully operational firearm. Plans are already available for homemade machine guns built completely from off the shelf parts. And NO, I am not kidding.
Did you ever see a moonshine still in operation? A good still , set back in the woods near a water supply, can produce unbelievable amounts of illegal whiskey. Here in North Carolina, good moonshine whiskey is considered a real treat and the making of it a true art.
I'm pointing to moonshiners here to say this: just as those whiskey makers can turn out all that illegal whiskey, gun smiths can -- and will -- manufacture illegal weapons at a quantity you will not believe. Plus, they will have no qualms about building a fully automatic rifle, or, as we pointed out above, even machine guns. No paperwork, no background checks, no serial numbers on the weapons, these weapons will be virtually untraceable.
Heck, I made my first zip-gun while in my early teens and carried it for years, loaded, on my person. For years, as an adult, I carried a loaded zip-gun, disguised as a ball point pen, in my shirt pocket -- everywhere I went. It fired a single round, but up close (and applied properly) it was lethal.
The point is -- the government will never get our guns. They may get SOME guns but they will never successfully disarm Americans. Just as in the days of Prohibition, whiskey making flourished, expect gun making to flourish. There will be a proliferation of weapons coming from home workshops to illegal gun/munitions factories. They will be flowing unchecked and unregulated by the government. It will be the government's worst nightmare.
One may call it "the law of unintended consequences," if you choose, but, I am of the opinion the gun grabbers know this and they intend to go ahead with their agenda to disarm America even with the certain knowledge they will make the proliferation of guns in America as great as, or greater than, it is today.
No. This is a power play on the part of the gun grabbers. It's not about gun control. It's about people control. It is an integral part of their authoritarian approach to governing.
They are playing with fire. It is safe to say, therefore, they're going to get burned.
